Some useful indicators for Ubuntu

Here are some tips for more useful Ubuntu desktop.

Calendar indicator

This AppIndicator displays your 10 upcoming events in the indicator menu. You can add new events, and (of course) these are synced with your Google Calendar. The synchronization can be manual or automatic. So, you can create new events and calendars, and you can edit and delete events.

To install Calendar Indicator in Ubuntu 14.04
sudo add-apt-get-repository ppa:atareao/atareao
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install calendar-indicator

My Weather Indicator

This displays the current weather information on the Unity top panel. You add your current (main) location, set units, autostart - On and refresh frequency. It knows four weather services. My favourite is the Evolution feature. It opens new window and shows temperature, humidity and cloudiness values for the next some days. For more weather information you can click on indicator icon and open "Forecast" menu. This tool shows you the weather information in every 15 mins.

Psensor

I use the Psensor for monitoring hardware sensors for example CPU temperature.  It can monitor

  • the temperature of motherboard and CPU sensors
  • the temperature of ATI/NVidia GPU sensors
  • the temperature of Hard Disk Drive
  • the rotation speed of the fans
  • the CPU usage
